Statement: The 5.4 figure is inaccurate — the actual average score is substantially different, either because the dataset is different than described (not one million projects), the calculation method differs (median vs. mean), or the score has changed significantly since the figure was reported.

Supporting Evidence Would Show

  • OpenSSF data showing the tracked project count is significantly different from one million.
  • Evidence that the reported aggregate score was a median, mode, or weighted score rather than an arithmetic mean.
  • Recent data showing the average score has shifted substantially from 5.4.
  • Methodological documentation showing the score aggregation method differs from simple averaging.

Eliminating Evidence Would Show

  • OpenSSF confirming both the dataset size (~1M projects) and the ~5.4 mean score.
  • Academic replication studies arriving at the same figure using the same dataset.
