Statement: CI adoption among open source projects is significantly higher than 40%, and the claim understates actual adoption. The 40% figure may come from outdated studies or methodologically limited samples.

Supporting Evidence Would Show

  • More recent studies (2024-2026) showing CI adoption rates of 50-70%+ among active open source projects
  • Evidence that GitHub Actions adoption has dramatically increased CI usage since its 2019 launch and especially since Travis CI's free-tier changes in 2020-2021
  • Studies showing that when filtering for active projects (recent commits, multiple contributors), CI adoption is substantially higher than 40%

Eliminating Evidence Would Show

  • Multiple recent large-scale studies consistently showing adoption rates near 40% even among active projects
  • Evidence that GitHub Actions growth has not substantially changed the overall CI adoption landscape
  • Studies explicitly controlling for project activity level still finding around 40% adoption
