CASP checklists are study-type-specific appraisal tools largely captured by Cochrane and ROBIS

Extract¶
CASP provides checklists for: Systematic Reviews, RCTs, Cohort Studies, Case Control Studies, Economic Evaluations, Diagnostic Studies, Qualitative studies, and Cross-Sectional Studies. Each checklist includes structured questions about study validity, results, and applicability.
Novelty assessment: CASP checklists operationalize the same concepts as Cochrane RoB 2 and ROBIS — structured bias assessment for specific study designs. The checklist format (prompt questions) differs from Cochrane's domain-based ratings, but the underlying concepts are identical. CASP is endorsed by the Cochrane Qualitative Methods Group, confirming the conceptual overlap.
CASP does not contribute concepts beyond the reference set. It is a practical implementation of Cochrane/ROBIS principles in checklist format.
Relevance to Hypotheses¶
| Hypothesis | Relationship | Strength |
|---|---|---|
| H1 | Weakly supports | Formal but not novel |
| H2 | Supports | Confirms overlap with reference set |
| H3 | Contradicts | Clearly formal |
Context¶
CASP is widely used in health sciences education and qualitative evidence synthesis. Its value is practical accessibility rather than conceptual novelty.
