In July 2002, Gartner reviewed their 1999 Linux predictions. They confirmed open source works effectively at infrastructure levels (load balancing, caching, DNS, SSL acceleration, web services like Apache). However, Gartner stated results for databases (MySQL) were 'inconclusive' regarding high-availability clustering, system management, and transaction middleware. They noted the open source community had demonstrated ability to organize with maintainers but questioned how far this applied 'up the food chain.'
