Relevance to Hypotheses¶
| Hypothesis | Relationship | Strength |
|---|---|---|
| H1 | Supports | Directly confirms Apache's 63% dominance by hostname count |
| H2 | Contradicts | Even by active sites, Apache held 62% — not just inflated by parked domains |
| H3 | Supports | Provides one half of the measurement duality (hostname perspective) |
Context¶
The 29.3M sites surveyed represented the entire visible web at the time. The hostname metric was the standard industry metric for web server market share in 2001. Netscape-Enterprise at 6% was in clear decline, having been the second-largest server in the late 1990s.
