Ipsos 31-country survey statistics — no 66% usage figure

URL: https://www.ipsos.com/en/ai-making-world-more-nervous

Extract

Survey conducted May 26 – June 9, 2023, among 22,816 adults across 31 countries:

  • 54% excited about AI-based products and services
  • 52% nervous about AI-based products and services
  • 54% agree AI has more benefits than drawbacks
  • 67% say they have a good understanding of what AI is
  • 51% say they know which products and services use AI
  • Nervousness increased 12 percentage points since previous survey

The survey does NOT report a "66% use AI" figure. The 67% figure relates to understanding what AI is, not to usage rates.

Relevance to Hypotheses

Hypothesis Relationship Strength
H1 Contradicts Strong — the 31-country Ipsos survey does not contain the 66% usage figure
H2 Supports Strong — confirms the survey exists but does not report what the claim says
H3 Contradicts The survey does show trust/distrust patterns, just not the 66% figure

Context

The 66% figure may have been confused with the 67% "good understanding of AI" figure from this survey, or conflated with the KPMG study's 66% usage figure published later.

Notes

This is the most diagnostic piece of evidence for this claim: the actual 31-country Ipsos survey does not contain the statistic attributed to it.
