The Guardian contacted 155 UK universities under FOI; 131 responded. Between 2023-2024, approximately 7,000 cases of AI cheating were identified — 5.1 per 1,000 students, up from 1.6 per 1,000 the previous year. Over a quarter of universities did not track AI cheating as a separate category.
