NCEES Model Law Engineer requirements for PE licensure
URL: https://ncees.org/licensure/
Extract¶
All US jurisdictions will provide a license to a "Model Law Engineer" who possesses:
- A baccalaureate degree in engineering from an EAC/ABET-accredited program
- Four years or more of acceptable and progressive engineering experience
- Passing scores on both the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination and the Principles and Practices of Engineering (PE) examination
- A record clear of violations of ethical standards
Reciprocity (licensure by comity) enables registered engineers to practice across jurisdictions. Most states have alternative pathways for non-ABET graduates, often requiring additional years of experience.
Relevance to Hypotheses¶
| Hypothesis | Relationship | Strength |
|---|---|---|
| H1 | Supports | Demonstrates formal, multi-step qualification process |
| H2 | Contradicts | The qualification process is rigorous and actively administered |
| H3 | Supports | "Most states have other additional pathways" — confirms jurisdictional variation |
Context¶
The four-step PE licensing process (degree + FE exam + experience + PE exam) represents years of preparation and demonstrates that the "Professional Engineer" title requires substantial formal qualification.
